ABOUT US

South Winds Sailing Club is a family friendly sailing club. Our club sails mostly on Lake Allatoona, located on the NW side of Atlanta, Georgia in the SE of the United States. We have regularly scheduled races, plus picnics and raft-ups. If you are not familiar with our raft-ups, we all gather in a cove on the lake and tie our boats together to share dinner and stories. The end of the year we have our Commodores Ball, which is our annual awards ceremony and winter party. We have monthly meetings to discuss clubs events.

Our club also sponsors the South Winds Sea Scouts Ship 100. The Sea Scouts is a coed organization branch of the Boy Scouts of America. This is our opportunity to help promote boating safety and leadership in young people ages 14-20. The Scouts are encourage to join in with the club racing and other cruising events. The Ship has full use of the Boy Scouts Aquatics Base located on Lake Allatoona. They have a full compliment of small, medium, and large boats.

If you would like to talk with someone in the club, send us an email from the "Contact Us" Page. Someone will return your email pretty soon. If you have interest in learning to sail or want to know what all those ropes do on a sailboat, come out to one of our races and ask to work as crew for one of our skippers.

Be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, water, snacks, and dress for the weather. We sail in cold and warm weather. On race days, we are typically on the water for 3 to 4 hours. If you are working as crew you will get a good workout and an excellent lesson in sailing and race strategy. We sail larger sailboats with cabins, so there is no chance of capsize. You will probably stay dry, except for a random splash, unless you want to swim between races to cool off. In the summer months several of the club members sail their small boat.
